IT4Control participates in the BNP Paribas Workshop on the theme of Project Portfolio Management...
2007 November -- How can simple and efficient Project Portfolio Management be implemented to ensure visibility and the respect of schedules and budgets?
Today, key IT department strategy centers on ensuring that the project portfolio is aligned with company ambitions and that operational piloting will allow delivery of projects on time, within budget and with risk under control. This seems easy but is actually very hard to achieve. As the number of projects increases, it becomes more and more difficult to maintain proper visibility of these projects. This can lead to major drift in terms of schedules or budget overrun.
In addition, project portfolio management requires the implementation of project screening to determine which projects have priority and what resources should be allotted to them. This screening should be done within a framework of governance that associates the IT department with the other company departments.
The implementation of proper Project Portfolio Management, or PPM, allows resolving these difficulties, but only if needs have been clearly defined and the chosen solution corresponds to company maturity.
At the Workshop, two major questions were discussed. First, what questions should be asked before starting to look for a solution? Second, what are the indicators and simple reports that can be used to effectively pilot projects and provide factual elements to discover the reasons behind drift, make the right decisions to correct it and ensure that the company has the proper means for pursuing its strategy?
